Hey Gardeners!

If your idea of a cool summer includes a fresh glass of minty lemonade or spicy pudina chutney with your meals, then it’s time to grow your own pudina (mint) at home—the right way!

Wanna know the secret to having a never-ending supply of mint all summer long? It’s all about when, where, and how you plant it. So grab your gloves, your gardening hat, and let’s dig in!

Best Time to Plant Mint?

Start in early summer—March to April is perfect! Pudina loves warmth, but it needs a good home to grow strong and happy.

The Container Matters!

Mint doesn’t grow deep; it spreads like wild grass. So, pick a container that’s at least 6 inches deep but wide enough to give it room to grow.

Take something like a rectangular grow box and make enough holes at the bottom for drainage. You don’t want soggy soil. Line the base with paper to prevent soil loss—easy fix!

Let’s Talk Mint Soil Mix

soil mix is important for the growth of pudina plants

Mint doesn’t like sitting in water but needs just a bit of moisture to stay hydrated. So, make your mix with:

  • 1 part regular garden soil
  • 1 part organic compost
  • 1 part sand
  • 1 part cocopeat
  • A handful or two of neem cake powder for pest protection

Mix it all together and fill up your container.

Time to Plant

Head to your nearest nursery and pick up healthy pudina saplings. If your container is long, plant two mint plants for max output.

Before planting, loosen the root ball slightly from all sides—this helps the roots grow outward freely. Place the plant in the center, making sure the leaves stay above the soil (not buried in it).

Gently press the soil around the base and give your plant a generous drink of water. Hydration station, activated!

Where to Place the Mint (Pudina) Plant?

For the first 2–3 days, keep your pudina in a shady spot. A little morning sunlight (1–2 hours) is okay.

After that, move it to a place where it gets half-day sun, basically till around 11 AM, and then shade for the rest of the day. Pudina loves this balance, just like your chai needs the right amount of sugar!

Extra Minty Tips:

  • Keep the soil moist, but not wet
  • Trim your mint regularly to encourage more growth
  • If the plant looks dull or the leaves go yellow, check for drainage or give it a boost of nutrition

Your Mint Deserves More Than Just Love

proper plant care boost healthy growth

To truly thrive, mint benefits from a well-nourished base. That’s why many seasoned gardeners swear by a holistic soil mix that not only drains well but also feeds the plant over time.

Use potting mediums available in the market, designed for shallow-rooted herbs like mint—it retains the right amount of moisture and is loaded with nutrients that promote robust root growth. Combine this with neem cake, compost, and cocopeat, and your mint will grow faster than gossip in a group chat!

And if you’re serious about plant health, integrate natural care products like foliar sprays or growth boosters that gently encourage lush, fragrant leaves without chemicals. These small upgrades make a big difference!

Now go ahead—make your terrace or balcony the mintiest spot in town. Your summer drinks, chutneys, and chaats will thank you for it!
